An ECLO providing support to someone recently diagnosed with a sight impairment.Mental Health Awareness Week runs from Monday 11th May to Sunday 17th May and the campaign theme is “Taking Action”, “Making a small step towards a positive action.”

We’re launching our campaign with a video featuring World Champion Blind Golfer Jason Bastable and how he found hope again through golf. After a sudden glaucoma diagnosis, Jason felt isolated and low. With support from our Sensory Specialist Worker, Abigail, he discovered blind golf – and it changed everything. This small step meant his confidence grew, his mental health improved, and he began to feel positive about the future again. Click this link to watch our YouTube video of Jason Small steps to better #MentalHealth with #BlindGolf this #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek – May 2026 to discover how small actions can truly make a big difference.

Being diagnosed with a vision impairment can feel overwhelming. But people don’t have to face it alone. Our Eye Clinic Liaison Officers (ECLOs) provide support at five Surrey hospitals, helping people newly diagnosed access services, connect with local groups, and discover equipment that can make everyday life easier. You can find out more about our ECLO service at: sightforsurrey.org.uk/get-help/vision-impairment/eye-clinic-liaison/

Our week ends with Calum’s story. Losing independence due to a major life transition can profoundly impact mental health. Calum tragically lost his sight at 23 years of age, after unknowingly consuming alcoholic drinks laced with methanol. We’ve helped him to regain his independence providing mobility training, daily living skills training and assistive tech support.

Here is the YouTube link to our video story where Calum talks about the support he’s received Supporting Calum’s confidence & independence – #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek – May 2026 and the difference it’s made – from long cane training that’s given him the confidence to leave the house and travel by train to lifechanging equipment for the home, so he can do every-day tasks, like making his own hot drink.

We’re inviting people to take a first step during Mental Health Awareness Week by getting in touch via the referrals form available throughout our website. If you know someone who could do with taking action and those first small steps to help improve their mental health, please send them the link to our page for support at: sightforsurrey.org.uk/get-help/
