To celebrate Deafblind Awareness Week (23rd-27th June) we are releasing a series of short videos on our social media channels highlighting the varied support we provide to people who are deafblind.
In our Friendship groups trip to Bocketts Farm, there are lots of different forms of communication being used. Our monthly Friendship group is for people who have combined sight and hearing loss. The groups outings are a wonderful way to help end feelings of isolation.
Deafblind Manual is a vital communication method for someone with little or no sight and hearing. In this post Julie, Deafblind Specialist Assessor and Harry, Senior Communicator Guide show how to transform British Sign Language into Deafblind Manual.
Later in the week we are showing a day in a life video of a Communicator Guide. Kaye is a Communicator Guide for the charity and visits Val, who has combined sight and hearing loss. Kaye visits Val once a week to do shopping together, go for walks and provide help with admin and general tasks around the home like reading mail.
We are also showing a short video about a young woman we support, Lucy, who is deafblind, and runs her own cake making business. Lucy supplies local cafes with cakes and takes orders for special occasions like birthdays. Lucy also uses our Communicator Guide services for shopping and going out, she especially likes visiting Top Golf.
Finally, we are celebrating Helen Keller’s birthday on 27th June and showing a relatively unseen picture of Helen with Alexander Graham Bell. Author, political activist and lecturer, Helen led the way advocating for the rights of people who are deafblind. She met scientist and inventor Alexander Graham Bell when he was her tutor in Boston. Both Bell’s mother and wife were Deaf which influenced his life’s work with hearing devices.
