Image shows BSL Teacher Cathy giving a thumbs up ok sign.To celebrate Sign Language Week (18th – 24th March) we have released a short film on our social media channels, FaceBook, Instagram and X, celebrating British Sign Language (BSL).

The film shows our BSL teacher, Cathy, and a few members of staff from the charity, who are all currently learning BSL, practising and showing their favourite sign in BSL.

Cathy informs us we are celebrating Sign Language Week to educate people and get more people to learn BSL.

British Sign Language became a legally recognised language in the UK on 28th April 2022 which gives BSL legal protection, meaning public services are legally required to follow guidance on how to put BSL in place.

Holly Ritchie, Social Care Assistant at Sensory Services by Sight for Surrey said, “we welcome Sign Language Week with open arms and the celebration of our beautiful language. We hope that with raising awareness, more people will become aware of BSL and learn our language. We are also delighted that BSL GCSE will be a part of the curriculum from September 2025 which will enrich our language further.”
