We have a fantastic opportunity for a Deaf Community Coordinator. This is an exciting role that will work across the county of Surrey, promoting wellbeing, reducing isolation, and working with Deaf people to effectively tackle barriers of access. This role will also provide important strategic representation and influence in a number of different forums in Surrey, including the Disability Partnership Board.

You will be responsible for the coordination and development of the well-established and enjoyable Deaf Café. In coproduction with the attendees, you will be organising relevant speakers and activities. Alongside the team of Community Champions, you will support greater access to the community hubs and enable peer led physical and social activities.

You will be an active promoter of Deaf Awareness and will personally deliver Deaf Awareness sessions in a variety of settings, including at the Breaking Down Barriers training workshops held by the charity, and for new staff joining the charity.

You may be required to provide cover for the Deaf Duty service, delivered in person or remote video calls. The service responds to a range of different queries from across the Surrey Deaf Community.

Through your work participating in various networks in Surrey, you will understand the barriers that community members are experiencing. In collaboration with the leadership team, we will capture common themes to support campaign activities striving to improve access, rights and promote inclusion.

You will be compassionate, empathic, self-motivated and confident person with excellent interpersonal skills and organisational skills.  You will be a confident communicator with British Sign Language (BSL) and have good IT and organisational skills.

You will be joining a highly supportive and compassionate team, passionate about promoting accessible services for people who are Deaf, hard of hearing, blind, partially sighted, and deafblind in Surrey.  You will be a team player working well as part of a team and working flexibly, you will be reliable and will always have an enthusiastic ‘can do’ approach.

This is an office-based role with travel across the county.  You must be able to travel independently across the county on a daily basis for events and forums and to engage with the community, you will often need to transport equipment including banners, fliers and other materials.
