Our Deafblind Friendship Group recently enjoyed a return visit to Brooklands Museum, where they spent the day exploring the fascinating history of motoring and aviation through a rich mix of sensory experiences.
For our group, visiting a museum is about much more than looking at exhibits. Brooklands offered plenty of opportunities to explore through touch, sound, vibration and movement, making the experience both engaging and accessible.
Discovering the history of Brooklands
The group enjoyed getting up close to a variety of classic vehicles and racing cars, discovering their shapes, textures and details through touch. They could also listen to the distinctive sounds of engines and motorcycles, bringing the history of the famous site to life in a different way.
One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity to take a spin around the famous Brooklands racing circuit. Feeling the movement of the vehicle as it travelled around the historic track offered a unique way to connect with the site’s incredible motor racing heritage.
The group also had the chance to sit inside a Formula One car once raced by Lewis Hamilton, providing a memorable opportunity to experience a piece of modern racing history at close quarters.
A glimpse into aerospace research
The visit wasn’t just about cars. The group also explored the fascinating Stratosphere Chamber, where extreme high-altitude and freezing conditions can be recreated for aerospace research.
It was another opportunity to discover something new and experience an environment that would otherwise be difficult to imagine.
Making memories together
Most importantly, the visit was about sharing an experience as a group. Exploring together, discovering new things and having the chance to enjoy these experiences in an accessible way made the day particularly special.
Our return visit to Brooklands Museum was a wonderful reminder that there are many ways to experience and connect with the world around us. Through touch, vibration, movement and sound, our group was able to explore, learn and make memories together.
